How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works in many different ways (there are lots of styles) it encourages, directs and enhances the bodies natural healing mechanisms, so that your recovery is faster and less painful. This can be achieved as acupuncture improves the blood flow to the area needing it, thus the bodies natural healing cells including immune system cells which remove diseased cells and / or repair damaged cells. Acupuncture is a powerful means to release muscle spasm. By improving the circulation in the area blood and nutrients can help to nourish and replenish damaged muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments and joints. Acupuncture also stimulates the brain to release endorphins which can give powerful pain relief and, can also help direct the body and internal organs to repair themselves. Acupuncture has also been shown to regulate the bodies immune, endocrine (hormones), blood and nervous systems which gives it the potential to correct all manner of problems including respiratory, digestive, metabolic, immune, emotional and reproductive issues. Please contact me if you wish to know how we can help you.
With more modern scientific techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and Scans of different areas of the brain it is possible to see the real-time effects that acupuncture has on the human Brain and thus throughout the body. There have been numerous Studies that have shown acupuncture to be powerful treatment for sciatica, fertility problems, muscle and joint pain, arthritis, anxiety, blood pressure, heart issues, digestive and neurological problems. There have also been some scientific experiments that have been inconclusive or negative about acupuncture this is often due to the western Scientific parameters which demands that the same protocol be repeated over and over again and achieve the same results consistently. However because the Chinese diagnostic method is so detailed a headache might have 10 different diagnosis and thus be treated quite differently using ten different acupuncture treatment protocols, so that the one acupuncture treatment protocol being tested will only work in 10% of the cases. Many western medical treatments often use a “one prescription fit’s all”, whereas Chinese Medicine uses a more individual approach.
In many ways Western medicine is only beginning to catch up with Chinese medical theory. We now recognise in the west that our Gut is our second brain (including Gut Microbiome) the Chinese have always acknowledged that the abdomen is where our life force resides. It is also a great reservoir of healing potential which is utilised using abdominal acupuncture. The Gut brain connection has been used for centuries to treat all manner of Physical, Emotional, Hormonal, Mental and internal health problems. As a western trained Biology graduate (B.Sc. Hons), I find it intriguing how acupuncture and particularly Abdominal Acupuncture can utilise our second brain to regulate all aspects of our health with rapid and long lasting effects.
Yes acupuncture has a scientific basis although the theory is different to conventional Western ideas about the workings of the human body (there are of course many similarities too). Chinese medical theory believes that there is no separation between mind and body, the environment we live in, how we eat and the emotional impacts of daily life all of which can have a profound effect on our health. The first books to be written in human history are Chinese medical reference books these date back almost 3,000 to 4,000 years. The Chinese have always had a deep understanding of anatomy and internal medicine. Since these first books were written observation of various illness and anatomical problems has led to tried and tested effective methods of treatment and ensuring good health using acupuncture, nutrition, herbal medicine, Qi Gong, Tai Qi & good life style. Acupuncture and other aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) continue to evolve and to work more in conjunction with Western Medicine, if you are receiving treatment from your G.P. / Physiotherapist there is usually no problem with using acupuncture to improve your healing time.
